Almuñecar |
 |
As the capital of Costa Tropical , Almuñecar is considered to be the most important resort town. It is also the oldest municipality where Phoenicians once settled primarily because of its good climate and abundant fishing. Almuñecar is also very popular to local and foreigners alike during summer months since it enjoys a unique, subtropical climate, which is perfect for having a good time at the beach.
Almuñecar has a rich history. Its monuments scattered throughout the town are constant reminders of that history. The town was once under the regime of the Phoenicians and then of the Romans. The theaters, temples, and aqueducts in the town are living proofs of their settlement in the area.

Today, Almuñecar is one of the centers of attraction in Costa Tropical . Its waters provide superb conditions for snorkeling and scuba diving and the wealth of underwater life is a treasure to the eyes. Its El Peñon del Santo provides amazing views of the beaches and bays. To the west of El Peñon , on Cristobal beach, a sheet of fishing boats with faded pastel hulls can be seen resting on the shore, waiting for the fishermen to get ready for a night s trip out to sea.
The agriculture in the region provides another evidence of the superb climate, which Almuñecar is blessed with. Much of the terrain is overflowing with tropical fruits such as avocados, mangos, pineapples and cherimoyas.
