Excursions

Salobreña offers a lot of things to do for tourists and visitors. An outing through the town would be a good starting point. Here, you can explore the back streets and visit the old Moorish castle. For those who are not fit enough to take a walk, there s a small bus, which stops at various points along the seafront promenade and takes you up to the old quarter of town. The streets, as expected, are a delightful maze of whitewashed buildings with balconies overflowing with colorful geraniums and bougainvilla.

The streets wind their way inexorably up to the castle, culminating in steep cobbled steps. Liquid refreshments and a delicious fresh snack at one of the local tapas bars are such good rewards from the hearty walk down the streets.

Paying a visit to the Town Hall museum in the old quarter and learning about Salobreña' s colorful past and its human habitation spanning 6,000 years would also be an exciting experience.

Another way to spend the day right is to marvel at the sea, coastal and mountain views from the Arabic castle which towers above the town, being 105 meters above sea level. The castle attracts thousands of visitors every year and is the venue of various concerts and shows, particularly in the summer months. It's an impressive spectacle, especially when illuminated at night.
For a taste of history, taking a tour down the castle would bring you to the 16th century, Mudejar-style church, the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario . This piece of architecture was built on the site of an old mosque and bears the legacy of the Moorish invaders in its spectacular Arabic archway. There were a number of Roman remains and other archaeological finds that were recovered from this area.

Heading beach wards, the gardens of Parque de la Fuente is where you'll find tropical birds and plants, a pond and a children's play park. This place would be a loveable spot for children and children-at-heart.

Dividing the coastline here is a huge rock jutting out into the Mediterranean and affording wonderful views across the sea and to the mountains. The rock served as a prison in the first and second centuries and later became a Christian burial ground. An artificial reef has proved successful in attracting a wealth of marine life here and is subsequently a delight for divers and snorkellers.
