Nightlife

Though Salobreña is not the place for all-night dance clubs, lap dancing, and karaoke, you will still enjoy a lovely nightlife with plenty of traditional Spanish fiestas, evening cultural events, live music and bars and restaurants that stay open until the wee hours.

Touring the tapas bars is the most popular activity at night time for a leisurely meal in one of the many Spanish or international restaurants. Taberna Alhaja in Calle Placeta and Bar Pesetas in Calle Boveda are among the many popular tapas bars in the old town where you can enjoy a wide variety of delicious local snacks including spicy prawns, clams, chorizo sausage and superb local cheeses. Some of the bars still follow the age-old tradition of providing a small portion of tapas with every drink. Tapa literally means cover in Spanish; this delightful Andalucian custom originates from the slivers of bread once supplied by bar owners to keep the flies off customers' drinks.

One of the top dining spots in the old town is Meson Rincon Yusuf, located in the main plaza near the museum. The restaurant has a delightful dining area amidst antiques and modern art. They feature an extensive menu ranging from local specialties like gazpacho and stuffed peppers, to "avestruz" ostrich steaks.

There is also a popular restaurant near the castle in Calle Antequera called La Traviesa . It specializes in pizzas, but it also offers plenty of other delicious dishes like grilled goat s cheese on crispy bread with garden greens.

Salobrena does not allow itself to be left behind in terms of entertainment. It has its complement of traditional Spanish fairs and fiestas and the summer season sees numerous concerts and shows many of which are held in the beautiful setting of the old Moorish castle.

One of the highlights of the year is the " Lucero de Alba " flamenco festival, held in August at the castle where you can enjoy the soulful music, skillful guitar playing and exquisite dancing of some of the most talented practitioners of this finest of Andalucian art forms.

One of the biggest fiesta weeks happens towards the end of June (from the 24th to the 29th) when the religious feasts of San Juan and San Pedro are observed with a good old Spanish-style knees-up, bringing together locals and tourists alike regardless of age or religious belief. The streets become a delightful snarl of music, dancing, parades, processions and fireworks.
